Board Certified Pedorthist
A Certified Pedorthist is a healthcare professional specifically trained in comprehensive foot care using therapeutic footwear, supportive inserts and biomechanically engineered custom foot and ankle orthoses for the foot and lower leg.
A pedorthist receives a prescription from a physician who has addressed a patient's symptoms, provides a diagnosis. and then refers the patient for care from a member of the allied healthcare team; such as a pedorthist. The goal and purpose of the pedorthist is to assist the physician in preventing or reducing pain, and slowing down or retarding disabling conditions of the lower extremities.
Pedorthics as a healthcare profession began to take shape in the late 1950s and is defined as the design, manufacture, modification and fit of footwear, shoes, foot and ankle orthoses to alleviate problems caused by disease, overuse, congenital defects or injury.
